In our view planing for social infrastructure is an approach taken to all our projects rather than a type of project. In relation to key buildings such as libraries and community centres this requires that they are located and designed not only to be efficient and pleasant places for the delivery of a particular service, but also so they can become a focus for community pride. Sensitively designed they can become places that reflect that communities values, ideals and achievements and are emblematic of the care and commitment shown to that community by the service provider. An equally important aspect of planning for social infrastructure requires us to plan interventions in the public realm that make them places to be rather than spaces to pass through. This means designing streets that reconcile the demands of vehicular movement with qualities that invite people to walk or cycle, play and perhaps get to know their neighbours better.
